Specialists in economic affairs welcomed the decisions of the Council of Ministers aimed at protecting the local product and supporting the national industry, which it took last week by imposing high customs duties on items and materials that can be produced locally, stressing the importance of such steps in advancing the Iraqi industry, while stressing the necessity To meet these decisions, taking into account the "Consumer Protection" law, and work to study the needs of the market to prevent doubling of prices.
In a step described as "mission", the Council of Ministers decided to impose customs duties of up to 200% on some imported products, with the aim of paving the way for the national industry. Especially since some specialists pointed out the possibility of a deficit in the production of certain items of materials on which high customs duties were imposed, such as "alcoholic beverages".
The decisions included the imposition of an additional customs fee of 65% of the unit of measure for (epoxy and modern dyes) products, (floor and clothing freshener, softener and softener for textiles of both types / liquid and gel), (shampoo for washing colored, black and dark clothes) and (floor gel, general cleaner, and dishwashing paste). And dishes) in addition to extending the amount of the additional customs fee by (100%) of the unit of measurement for the product (cigarettes) and the product (corrugated or plain cardboard in the form of boxes, plates, or separators, printed or unprinted).
The decisions also included the imposition of a customs fee of (200%) of the unit of measure of the (alcoholic beverages) product, and of (20%) of the unit of measure of (the product of plastic pipes and accessories (PPR & PPRC).
The economist, Basem Jamil Antoine, saw during his interview with "Al-Sabah" the presence of "some Iraqi products that have very high technical specifications and can meet the needs of the local market, but despite that, a calculation must be made to know the production quantities of each local product and the consumption capacity of it to stand On the ability of Iraqi factories to meet all needs, indicating that the importance of this process lies in paving the way for importing the same product in the event of a production deficit for it by local factories.
Antoine stressed the need to set a real calendar to see if there is local production capable of filling the demand in order not to have a crisis in obtaining a particular commodity and thus the occurrence of inflation in its prices.
Despite the importance of the decision in supporting the national industry, however, Antoine expressed his surprise at setting fees he described as "very high" on goods and materials that are not manufactured locally, such as "alcoholic beverages", calling for a review of such decisions whose results could be negatively reflected, in While there is a need to add fees on the import of cigarettes, for several reasons, including the existence of long-established factories capable of supplying the local market with types of cigarettes, as well as their health harm to humans.
In parallel with the necessities of raising the customs tariff to protect the national product, expert Antoine believes that government agencies should take into account at the same time the provisions of the “Consumer Protection” law and work to study the local market before taking such decisions that could double prices for citizens, and ultimately lead to obtaining Price inflation in many local and imported products.
Antoine praised government trends supporting the work of the private sector, and recommendations calling for overcoming red tape and bureaucracy in dealing with that sector, indicating that these trends would create fruitful cooperation between the "public and private" sectors and thus achieve important economic achievements, pointing at the same time to the need to follow up on those Decisions and ensure their implementation by government institutions that deal directly with the private sector.
