The Ministry of Transport revealed the proposed route for the "development" road that extends from Al-Faw to the Turkish border, with its two parts designated for trucks and railways, with a length of 1,175 km.
Wajdi Saleh Shuaib, director of the projects department at the General Railways Company, said,
"The ministry has obtained the required approvals for the proposed route for the road, which is in two parts, the first is a land road for trucks, and the other is a highway for travelers and goods with a length of 1,175 kilometers."
In an interview with the official newspaper, "Al-Sabah", which was followed by Mawazine News, Shuaib indicated that "the road extends from the great port of Faw to the Turkish border, where the ministry is studying preparing designs for the project with the aim of completing it by 2028."
He explained, "The first phase of the road includes the railway line, which falls within the plan to develop the port of Faw, with a capacity of more than three million containers annually, while the number of travelers is more than 13 million annually, with plans to raise loads and capacities by 2038." to 2050," noting that "the road will be interspersed with rest areas for passengers and others for loading and unloading."
And he added, "The railway project within the project will consist of two lanes, the first is a line for transporting passengers at a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and the second is for loads at a speed ranging from 130 to 140 kilometers per hour. As for the land road, it will be dedicated to transporting goods with three lanes for each direction, starting from near the port." Umm Qasr and parallel to the Kuwaiti border until it reaches the Turkish border.
Shuaib pointed out that "the road will pass through nine provinces, as it starts from the port of Faw to the city of Basra to Nasiriyah, then Samawah, and Najaf to the west of the city of Karbala, and then enters the Abu Ghraib area in Baghdad to head north to Samarra, then to Tikrit, then Baiji, to Mosul, and then to the west." To the Syrian border in the city of Rabia, and then end up at the Iraqi-Turkish border.

He noted that "the ministry is currently discussing the design stages, after the proposed route and the preliminary and final feasibility study have been approved, as designs will be prepared from now in order to complete the road and railway track in the year 2028."
