Shafaq News/ A British magazine revealed today, Friday, that Arab countries want to end the Hamas movement, but they fear being in the line of fire. They also fear a long war in Gaza, which would sabotage their economic plans, while describing the Arab and Islamic summit that... It was held in Riyadh as “Dukkan Kalam”.
The Economist magazine highlighted, in a report it published, the emergency Arab and Islamic summit in Riyadh, which was held a month after the war on Gaza, which is still a daily occurrence on television and dialogue screens throughout the Middle East, pointing out that the plight of the Palestinians captures the attention of the Arabs and inflames feelings. , in a way that does not touch the plight of Yemen, Sudan, or Syria.
    "talk shop"
According to the report, the joint summit ended with strong statements reflecting anger, calling for an immediate ceasefire, urging member states to “break the siege on Gaza,” and calling for the imposition of an arms embargo on Israel.
The magazine explained that it is easy to ignore the meeting as just a “talk shop” that the Arab League usually holds, as a number of leaders denounced the double standards of the West, especially when it comes to the Palestinians. This is true, but they did this at the summit in which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is considered one of the biggest war criminals of the current century, participated.
The magazine says that parts of the final statement contain a paradox. Instead of breaking the siege, Egypt helped to continue it for nearly two decades, and no OIC country sells weapons to the occupation, even though some of its countries buy weapons from them.
    Contradictions at the top
As the magazine explained, the summit reveals a lot about the contradictions behind the regional response to the war. Many Gulf countries do not mind the occupation eliminating the Hamas movement, adding that these countries want the “axis of resistance” to be hit, but they fear being in the line of fire. These countries have, for several years, adopted a narrative that focused on economics rather than ideology. It fears a long war in Gaza, which means sabotaging its plans.
The magazine shed light on Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, who participated in the summit and wore over his religious robe the Palestinian keffiyeh, the symbol of Palestinian identity, and said that his speech lasted 40 minutes, in which he called at one point to send weapons to the Palestinians, but this request was politely rejected, and many demanded an economic and diplomatic boycott. And even that was turned away.
Only a few Arab countries were able to summon ambassadors to Israel, and even those with diplomatic relations did not want to sever them completely, and the Gulf states ruled out the use of oil weapons, as they did in 1973.
At a conference this November, Khalid Al-Falih, the Saudi Minister of Investment, said: “This is not on the table,” and the Saudis want the stability of the oil market for years to come in order to finance the diversification of the economy.
The outcome of the summit was divisive. Some Arabs were happy with the tough rhetoric, while others saw hesitation on the part of their governments and surrender to the war. If the meeting were stripped of military threats and economic boycotts, all that would remain was tough talk.
    Special interests of states
According to the magazine, each country acts out of self-interest; Saudi Arabia has gone ahead with its investment conference while the war is raging, but the region is trying to act as if nothing has changed.
Even Iran, which supports resistance groups, acted with a kind of pragmatism, and despite the attacks carried out by loyalist armed groups against American targets, it decided not to waste the power of Hezbollah, the largest proxy group in a comprehensive battle to support the Palestinians.
In the meeting on the sidelines of the summit between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Raisi, who is visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time, the impression was that rapprochement still exists, and that no one wants a regional war, at least at the present time.
In the long term, the events of the past weeks are a reminder of the fragile situation in the Middle East between endless conflicts and attempts to stop conflicts, but the Gaza war has sharpened the choice. In order for Israel to succeed in its war in Gaza, it must make concessions for peace, which is what the United States is pushing in the midst of the war.
