The Kurdistan Region warns of a mass migration of Iraqis to other countries in the future

Shafaq News/ The Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Bikard Talabani, warned on Friday of a mass internal migration of Iraqis that will expand and extend to other countries in the future if solutions are not found to climate change and water scarcity and the resulting negative impacts on the country’s environment.
This came in a press conference held on the sidelines of the annual conference of the Iraqi-British Business Council, which was held in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates under the title “Iraq, Building a Sustainable Future.”
Talabani said during the conference, "We have concerns for the future of the Kurdistan Region, represented by the issue of climate change, which also affects central and southern Iraq."
She explained that “climatic and environmental impacts on central and southern Iraq, in addition to causing water scarcity and the decline of green spaces, will cause the loss of fertile land and agricultural crops, and this affects food security and leads to migration from central and southern Iraq to the northern part of it, which is Kurdistan Region".
Talabani warned, saying, “If the effects of climate change are not reduced, then there is no doubt that this migration will not only remain within the framework of the region and Iraq, but will extend to other countries,” stressing, “We need international support in order to be able to reduce the effects of this.” Climate changes at the level of the Kurdistan Region and all of Iraq.
Iraq is among the five countries most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, according to the United Nations.
The World Bank said, at the end of 2022, that Iraq faces an urgent climate challenge that it must confront by moving towards a “greener and more environmentally friendly” development model, especially by diversifying its economy and reducing its dependence on carbon.
According to a report issued by the organization, by the year 2040, “Iraq will need $233 billion in investments to respond to its most urgent development needs as it embarks on greener and more comprehensive growth,” which is equivalent to 6% of its annual gross domestic product.
