    Economy News - Baghdad
The Minister of Industry, Khaled Battal, announced on Wednesday the achievement of self-sufficiency in cement, and while he referred to the geographical redistribution of cement factories, he stressed the intention to develop the Kufa and Najaf factories.
Battal said, in a statement reported by the official news agency, and seen by Al-Eqtisad News, during his visit to the headquarters of the General Cement Company, “Today we conducted a visit to the headquarters of the Iraqi General Cement Company, and we held a meeting with the board of directors and talked about the importance of providing cement for the future,” indicating that “In the coming years, there will be an increasing demand for basic building materials such as bricks, rebar, cement and ceramics.”
He added, "Cement has a special character now, and there is self-sufficiency with an increase in demand over the past months, as we found there are indications of this increase due to the large number of infrastructure and construction projects, and the demand will increase in the coming months and years," noting that "the demand for building materials will increase." To double in the next 5 or 6 years, after the transfer of the city of Al-Jawahiri a few days ago, in addition to four other cities that will be transferred, in addition to the infrastructure projects that are increasing in completion rates, the projects that currently exist and the projects that will be transferred in the coming years.”
He stressed that "a clear plan was drawn up following the conference on mineral investment, petroleum chemical industries, fertilizers and cement, which was held last January 3-4, and some investment opportunities were referred through industrial development, and we also gave a group of opportunities to the National Investment Authority to distribute them over the geographical area, where We found that there is a problem in the geographical distribution of the cement industry, and this, of course, depends on the availability of raw materials and consumption,” pointing out, “We have redistributed the factories geographically, as well as to meet the increasing need, as I mentioned, for the cement industry.”
He stressed, "There are problems in some factories, and we have been directed to solve part of them, and these solutions will be completed in the coming periods," explaining that "there is a problem with the obsolescence or age of the factories affiliated with Iraqi Cement, as the most recent factory was established in 1985 and the subsequent obsolescence in technology."
He stated that "there are two factories that are still working in the wet method, as specialists distinguish between the wet, semi-wet and dry method," which are the factories of Kufa and Najaf, which consume more energy and produce within limited levels, pointing to "the possibility of processing it and converting it from the wet method to the semi-wet method." “With increased production to meet requirements quickly.”
He stated, "We discussed with the company's Board of Directors a future plan for five and ten years to increase production on the one hand and to overcome the extinction that may occur in the factories for the next 5 or 10 years."
He stressed "the necessity of developing a clear strategic vision to meet production and maintain the self-sufficiency that the country currently enjoys."
