WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday his Palestinian counterpart and Israeli prime minister pledged to support his efforts to bring peace to the Middle East, while Mahmoud Abbas called on the government of Israel to respond to the demands of striking prisoners.
"I will do everything in my power to launch the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis," Trump told a joint news conference with Abbas in the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem.
"I am looking forward to working with President Abbas on other important issues to achieve support for terrorism and support for the Palestinian economy," he said, adding that the Palestinian president had committed himself to taking action against terrorism and extremism.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump arrived in Bethlehem for a short visit as part of his first foreign tour as president. On Monday, the US president met with Israeli officials on his arrival in the Jewish state.
For his part, Abbas said that Trump's visit and his meeting had raised hopes of reaching a peace agreement with Israel. "I hope that Trump will enter history as the one who has achieved peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis," Abbas said.
He pointed to the strike of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, which entered the second month, stressing that the demands of the prisoners are fair and called on the Israeli government to respond to these demands, referring to the suffering of mothers of prisoners.
He renewed his commitment to cooperate with the United States to make peace with Israel on the basis of the two-state solution, the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab initiative, and reiterated its commitment to occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state.
