Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The State of Kuwait drilled an oil well near the Umm Qasr border district, in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq, in a move that was met with protest from the people of the district.
Umm Qasr District is located southeast of Al-Zubair District in Basra Governorate, and its center is the city of Umm Qasr. It was created on October 6, 1981.
A video clip showed the Kuwaitis digging an oil well, close to the Umm Qasr district, while a number of citizens of the district gathered to watch what was happening, criticizing the lack of intervention by officials and tribal sheikhs regarding the Kuwaiti oil drilling taking place.
The director of Umm Qasr district, Saleh Abdul Mahdi Habib, said, “During the recent period, the area adjacent to the State of Kuwait witnessed the Kuwaitis carrying out a massive campaign to drill oil wells,” explaining that “drilling in the previous period was a little more than one kilometer away from the border.”
Saleh Abdul Mahdi Habib added, “Recently, Kuwait has drilled an oil well, in an area very close to the border and forbidden,” noting that “the area is located within the last demarcation, but the drilling is very close to the border.”
The area of Umm Qasr district is 287 square kilometers and its population is about 85 thousand people, according to the district director.
The director of Umm Qasr district confirmed: “We appealed to the federal government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Iraqi House of Representatives, and the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee to discuss the issue. Is it permissible to drill wells nearby or not, or is it being withdrawn from Iraqi wells or not?”
Saleh Abdul Mahdi Habib noted that “the issue is up to the Iraqi government,” pointing out that “Kuwait is in the process of drilling the well in the aforementioned area, and has not reached the stage of extracting oil.”
Saleh Abdul Mahdi Habib pointed out that “the area in question is located opposite the borders of Umm Qasr district, and it includes a large group of wells,” stressing that “the well is very close to Umm Qasr district.”
The livelihood of the people of Umm Qasr district varies between employment, whether in the ports or other departments, and work in industry such as the iron and steel factory, the cement factory, and oil factories, and also in agriculture, as there are about 720 farms in Umm Qasr that produce various crops such as tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, onions, pears, and others.
There are no oil wells within the borders of the district, but rather in the north of the city between it and the Safwan District, where there is a group of wells for the Basra Oil Company called within the scope of the Safwan Oil Dome, according to the district director.
According to Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, Iraq's extractive capacity is approaching 5 million barrels per day of oil, and Iraq's gas production currently reaches 3,200 million standard cubic feet.
Iraq currently ranks 12th in the world in terms of the volume of gas reserves.
