LONDON (Reuters) - British authorities said on Thursday they had begun putting extremist prisoners in separate positions to prevent them from pushing other prisoners to extremism.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that a new "separate center" was opened to accommodate 28 prisoners in Frankland near Durham in north-east England, according to "AFP".
This one out of three centers will be very opening itself.
"The most dangerous criminals are being separated from the other prisoners to prevent them from being affected," said prison minister Sam Gimah.
The move to develop separate centers follows a recommendation by a study of prison extremism published last year.
A number of prisoners with a strong presence, who call themselves "princes" and exercise extreme influence and radicalization, have the rest of the prison population Muslim, the study said.
Official figures show there were 186 detainees on terrorism-related charges by the end of March this year, up 15 percent from a year earlier.
