Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Fifteen people were poisoned after drinking contaminated water in a refugee camp in Mosul, said a medical source on Wednesday.
Shafaq News quoted the source saying that 15 poisoning cases were detected among refugees at al-Salamiya camp in Nimrud, east of the city. The source said initial medical checks of the affected persons proved that the poisoning was caused by impotable water they received from government and private organizations.
Officials at the Iraqi migration ministry have not commented on the report yet.
Iraq’s war against Islamic State militants has displaced more than four million Iraqis since 2014, with a U.S.-backed campaign launched in October 2016 and concluded early July to retake the city of Mosul displacing more than 900.000 people, according to government and United Nations figures.
Iraqi refugees have suffered food and medicine shortages at refugee camps since the launch of the Mosul campaign.
In mid June, two refugees died and at least 800 died in al-Khazer camp in Mosul after a food poisoning incident that was blamed on a Qatari charity thought to have been the provider of the meals.
