[ltr][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]BAGHDAD, Oct 11 (Reuters) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich called on the International Day for the Rejection of the Death Penalty to abandon those methods he described as barbarism.
"Four countries in the world, including Iraq, carry out 87% of the total death sentences in the world and on Iraq, Iran, China and Saudi Arabia to abandon these barbaric methods," he said. "According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Of all internationally recorded death sentences ".
Guterich expressed his concern over the move to reconsider the moratorium on executions in cases related to terrorism. "There is no place for the death penalty in the 21st century," he said, referring to "the lack of transparency in the implementation of the death penalty, because some governments hide information about the death row and the reason for these sentences."
In September, the Justice Ministry announced the execution of 40 people in al-Hout prison in Dhi Qar province, where members of the local government were detained.
