[ltr]The delegation of the negotiating body of the Syrian opposition in the Geneva negotiations expressed its readiness to hold direct talks with the government and called on the United Nations to pressure Damascus to implement the political transition.[/ltr]
[ltr]The negotiating committee told the media on Friday that it had held a meeting with a large group of foreign diplomats and representatives of the "supporting countries of the Syrian people" to discuss developments in the negotiating process currently under way in Geneva.[/ltr]
[ltr]The head of the committee, Nasr Hariri, stressed his delegation's full readiness to enter into direct negotiations with government representatives. He called on the United Nations to press Damascus to "engage in this process as soon as possible and implement international resolutions to reach a political transition."[/ltr]
[ltr]Hariri stressed that his delegation represents all factions of the opposition, and continued: "The game of opposition by the regime must stop."[/ltr]
[ltr]Hariri praised efforts exerted by the international community aimed at moving forward the political process, which he said frustrated the government's attempts to derail the settlement.[/ltr]
[ltr]For his part, accused the official spokesman of the opposition delegation, Yahya Aridi the Syrian government to continue to ignore the political process and focus on the use of violence against civilians, saying that these methods claimed the lives of hundreds of dead in the Gouta of East Damascus.[/ltr]
[ltr]The spokesman added that the cessation of these crimes is the responsibility of all, adding that the way to achieve a political solution is a cease-fire and shelling and the introduction of humanitarian assistance to the needy as the siege lifted from the besieged areas.[/ltr]
[ltr]The news came as the head of the Syrian government delegation to Geneva, Bashar al-Jaafari, announced his delegation's refusal to enter into any direct negotiations with the opposition, attacking the UN special envoy to Syria, Stefan de Mistura.[/ltr]
