Baghdad - Mawazine News
In recent years, every time an international report that ranks the worst cities in the world in several aspects of living, Baghdad ranks high in these reports.
In 2018, Mercer International, a consultancy, released a report, in which Baghdad was ranked the world's worst to live, maintaining that status for ten years in a row, and today, unfortunately, is still there.
Iraqis receive such reports with great sadness. These issues relate to basic, not recreational, topics such as comfort, climate pollution, housing, roads, education, health, and other standards and classifications.
In general, Iraqis believe that their country, since the US invasion, continues to decline in various aspects, and hold the occupation, and the religious and civic parties that have succeeded to govern the country, since 2003 and until now, responsible for this.
Many Iraqis find these reports to be highly credible, mainly due to official corruption, but there are those who find that these reports have political dimensions, which are not entirely correct.
Iman Hussein al-Moussawi, a former consultant in the Iraqi Ministry of Planning's field survey program, explains that the reports cannot be considered accurate, but at the same time they cannot be accused of lying.
But international reports, which classify Baghdad as the worst, do not take into account that they and all of Iraq was from 1980 to 2017 in war and internal and external battles, and if "a country went through what Iraq went through what remains of the impact," she said.
"Yes, Baghdad still lives on the buildings of the 1970s and the streets of the 1980s, security is fluctuating, and there is no health care or education as in other countries. Pollution rates are very high as a result of random measures by the Ministry of State and companies, whether air pollution or Water, but its survival in the last ranks is unfair; there is progress, and Baghdad is much nicer than what is filmed. "
However, most areas of Baghdad lack basic services, such as electricity, water for human use, sanitation, a significant lack of environmental, health and educational services, as well as the proliferation of armed manifestations, which is one of the most significant problems, according to civil activist Janan al-Saadi. It considers that corruption is behind Baghdad as bad as the rest of Iraq.
Speaking to Al-Arabi Al-Jadeedi, Al-Saadi said that "voluntary activities by civil society organizations that urge the community to make cities cleaner and safer are offset by government or partisan tendencies that fail these programs."
“While activists are campaigning for planting, planting and cleaning the gardens and the central islands, some of these areas are overrun by digging them and pouring iron bases to erect religious, partisan, factional, or sectarian advertisements, in a way that is ugly and infringing on its beauty.”
"Such acts violate municipal laws, but we are doing so and are also going over the sidewalks to put these plates. It is a truncated pavement that leaves no room for pedestrians," Saadi said.
"All these scenes and many more are the results of the rampant corruption in the country," Saadi said.
Two days ago, the Central Statistical Organization of the Ministry of Planning, announced that "only 10% of the generated waste is recycled in Iraq, which dumped about 800 thousand tons of miscellaneous waste," pointing out that the proportion of the population served by waste collection amounted to 63.5%, that is, one third The population of Iraq is not covered by the garbage collection service
