Five protesters were killed in Baghdad with tear gas "penetrating their skulls," Amnesty International said on Thursday, calling on Iraq to stop using the "unprecedented" type of bombs, which are 10 times the weight of the usual tear gas canisters.
Baghdad's Tahrir Square has become the center of the movement demanding the "overthrow of the regime." There, security forces showered with occasional tear gas.
In five days, at least five demonstrators were killed by "penetrating skulls" bombs fired by security forces, according to Amnesty.
The bombs, made in Bulgaria and Serbia, are "unprecedented" and "aimed at killing, not dispersing" demonstrators, the organization said.
Medical X-rays, which Amnesty International has confirmed, also show bombs that completely penetrated the skulls of these martyrs.
Tear gas canisters, usually used by police around the world, weigh between 25 and 50 grams, according to Amnesty, but those used in Baghdad "weigh from 220 to 250 grams" and are "ten times more powerful" when released.
A doctor in Baghdad told AFP he had seen "for the first time" casualties from the bombs.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the doctor added, "We know that the injured were hit by bombs through the smell. If they are still alive, we are looking for the wound to remove the bomb."
"It is clear that the effects are direct," he said, not caused by a rebound of bombs fired on the ground.
Amnesty International quoted a doctor at a hospital near Tahrir Square as saying that he receives "six to seven people a day with head injuries" by those bombs.
This comes at a time when more than 250 people have been killed in protests and acts in Iraq since October 1, according to an official toll.
