PARLIAMENTARY FOREIGN AFFAIRS: WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE REGARDING THE REQUEST TO JOIN THE GULF COOPERATION COUNCIL

Baghdad / National News Center
A member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Amer Fayez, said on Monday (September 6, 2021) that Iraq submitted a request to the Gulf Cooperation Council for the purpose of joining it after the fall of the previous regime, but so far the council has not accepted Iraq's request to join.
And Fayez, in a press statement followed by the National News Center, said that "Iraq submitted a request to the Council to join it, and a series of contacts took place in this regard, as well as a meeting held in April 2019 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between the joint committee formed for this purpose between Iraq and the Council of Ministers." cooperation".
And he added, "The meeting decided to hold a second meeting in the capital, Baghdad, two months after the first meeting, but it has not been achieved so far, and therefore the Council did not take the initiative to consider Iraq's request seriously or respond by accepting or rejecting it."
He explained that "some of those countries fear Iraq's accession and consider it still politically and security compelled," noting that "Iraq's accession will be a great addition to the council and will contribute to more political, economic and social openness."
He pointed out that "the accession will contribute to reviving the Iraqi market through the entry of Gulf companies and capital into the country, as well as increasing the level of security cooperation with regard to the intelligence aspect and the exchange of military and security experiences."
