Shafaq News/ The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hakim Al-Zamili, addressed an official letter to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi regarding government departments’ delay in completing the transactions of importing foodstuffs and vegetables despite the issuance of a decision to open the import of these commodities for a period of three months due to their rise in local markets as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In the book appended to Al-Kazemi’s signature, Al-Zamili demanded (exempting scarce goods from foodstuffs, vegetables and fruits from “customs” tariffs and taxes for a period of two months) and not to demand an import permit until the goods enter.
He also said that some relevant government departments practice delays in completing transactions and disruptive routines that are tainted by suspicion of extortion and bribery.

Representatives from Basra Governorate, the far south of Iraq, had sent an official letter to the federal government, calling for the speedy opening of southern outlets to enter foodstuffs without setting limitations and impossible conditions by the Minister of Agriculture in the caretaker government.
The deputies said, "The last date will be until tomorrow, Saturday, to open the Shalamcheh port for the entry of goods and foodstuffs. Otherwise, it will be opened against their will, and we will not allow the south to starve."
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced the import of potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplant due to a decrease in local production and high prices in the Iraqi markets.
The price of one kilogram of these four crops in the Iraqi local markets reached 1500 dinars, which is equivalent to more than one US dollar, while their prices previously ranged between 750-1000 Iraqi dinars, which constituted a great burden on low-income people in light of the high exchange rate of the dollar against the local currency. The prices of basic commodities and foodstuffs have doubled as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the prices of foodstuffs, goods, consumables, building materials, medicines and other imported materials that are included in the daily needs of the population in Iraq have risen.
