The Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee recommended the imposition of penalties and the replacement of those who prove their negligence in the complete collapse that occurred in the national electricity system yesterday, Saturday, while the federal police forces arrested saboteurs who cut power wires on the island of Makishifa, north of Samarra.
A member of the committee, Kamel Al-Aqili, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The act of sabotage by blowing up the transport lines between Salah al-Din and Haditha, targeting the electric power transmission sector, and leaving the Bakriya station in Basra out of service after a fire broke out in it, all of which led to the system going out of work.” These accidents were brought under control after continuous hours, and the stations gradually returned to work, and production became 20,000 megawatts, and it continues to rise to its level of 25,000 megawatts.
And he indicated, "After hours of work that followed a complete power outage throughout Iraq, the defect that afflicted the national grid was effectively controlled," noting that "real and radical solutions must be carried out by establishing new lines for transmission and distribution of energy, and the establishment of additional stations." It works on solar and gas energy, so that we can provide stable electricity, and the crisis is expected to end within the next two or three years.” And he indicated that “the Ministry of Electricity has formed an investigation team from several parties, including the Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee.”
The committee stated in a statement that it had formed several committees to follow up the reasons for the interruption of the electrical system throughout the country, and confirmed that it had "prepared recommendations after the committees finished their work, while the recommendations will include changing the negligent in their work and referring them for investigation, as well as using the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such cases." in the future.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Police Command announced, on Sunday, the arrest of four people accused of cutting electricity wires north of Samarra.
The command stated in a statement, "According to intelligence information and a distinguished security effort in following up the sectors of responsibility, the detachments of the 13th Brigade, the 4th Division, Federal Police, arrested four suspects riding a (Kia lamb) wheel, who were cutting the wires of the electric power transmission lines on the island of Makishifa within the operations sector." Samarra," the statement added, "the accused have been duly referred to the competent authorities to complete the necessary legal and investigative procedures against them."
On the other hand, a security source said, "The targeting of a main electricity transmission line in Salah al-Din prompted the security services in Diyala to reassess energy security plans, especially in remote areas through which many electricity transmission lines pass."
He added, "A security alert took place in 4 main axes through which main electricity transmission lines pass, in anticipation of any direct targeting, as happened in Salah al-Din, especially since the experiences of the past years have proven that sabotage operations are not limited to regions, but rather a scenario that moves from one governorate to another."
The source (who requested anonymity) indicated that Diyala did not record any targeting of electricity transmission towers during 2023, but preventive measures are necessary to stop any attempts aimed at recreating what he called the "electricity war scenario."
For his part, an official source in the Anbar local government revealed that the stations for pumping potable water to residential neighborhoods had stopped due to power outages and low supply rates from the main source, after the "Al-Bakr" station was subjected to sabotage operations.
