Iraq is moving towards renewable and alternative energy

Economic affairs specialists indicated an increase in their convictions about Iraq’s need for various energy sources instead of old fossil sources, in light of the interest of countries around the world towards alternative energy sources.
The Prime Minister’s Advisor for Economic Affairs, Dr. Mazhar Muhammad Saleh, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the world is living in the period of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in many fields, starting from the digital sector and ending with the production of alternative or renewable energy in all its forms.”
He pointed out that “the progress of the industrial revolution in the eighteenth century depended for a period of time on “traditional” fossil energy, but with the change in life, life faced problems due to this energy, which produces environmental pollutants,” stressing that “the search for alternatives to energy created another problem related to... In terms of cost, we see all scientific innovations searching for the lowest costs in producing electrical energy, which is why oil and gas still dominate the scene as they are the least expensive compared to other alternatives.
Saleh stated, “Facing environmental problems in the world requires searching for alternatives to energy, no matter how high the costs are,” noting that countries of the world, including Iraq, suffer from major environmental problems, including desertification.
He added, “The search for alternative energy sources represents a life and existential necessity in Iraq,” adding that “Iraq will continue to need oil and gas during the next twenty years in light of the failure of technology to find a solution to reduce the costs of alternative energy.”
For his part, the economic expert, Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “Iraq has made good steps in renewable and alternative energy, after it contracted two years ago with the company (Total) to establish units for producing electricity from solar energy, at approximately ( 2000 megawatts, in addition to a contract with the Emirati company (Masdar) to produce (2000) megawatts, and Iraq also has contracts in accordance with the Chinese framework agreement to produce approximately (1000) megawatts.”
He noted that “the total of these contracts represents about 20% of the entire volume of energy production, and this is a good percentage if we compare it with countries that have a long history in energy production and have not reached these levels of production or reliance on renewable or alternative energy.”
Al-Tamimi added, “The government had previously tried, in partnership with the Central Bank, to establish a lending initiative for the purpose of financing solar energy systems for homes by allocating approximately one trillion dinars, but unfortunately this step has not succeeded so far,” indicating that “this proves the Iraqi government’s clear approach since Two years towards adopting alternative energy instead of energy
traditional fossil.
