    Today, Tuesday (January 30, 2024), the Shiite Endowment in Diyala Governorate revealed the approval of a strategy to confront the “usury phenomenon” after the increase in its victims and the negative cases resulting from it “societally.”
    The head of the Shiite Endowment Office in Diyala, Mazhar Al-Tamimi, said in an interview with “Baghdad Al-Youm” that “usury is a negative condition, and Islamic law was clear in dealing with it, but it exists through some offices that exploit people’s need for money for multiple purposes.”
    He added, "Usury has caused the destruction of families and the rise in divorce rates, not to mention the queues of problems before the competent courts," noting that "3 directives were issued by the Endowment to address this situation, the most prominent of which is to address the issue in the pulpits of Husseiniyat and houses of worship in order to guide people and warn them of the consequences." Dealing with usury and seeking to contain this phenomenon through social and religious pressure in a way that prevents more victims and sheds light on the severe social harm it causes.”
    He pointed out, "It is necessary for security decision-makers in Baghdad to take action against those who practice usury and take all legal measures to prevent the phenomenon, given that the number of victims is constantly increasing."
    The Human Rights Commission confirmed the monitoring of many cases of divorce due to the repercussions of usury and the problems it causes in the social depths due to the accumulation of debts.
    Some banking offices and companies lend to citizens at high interest rates in exchange for taking their salary cards and holding them until the full amount is paid, something that government banks have warned about more than once.
