The organization’s country coordinator in Iraq, Maha Qataa, said, “The participation rate of Iraqi women in the labor market is 10.6%, meaning that out of 13 million women of working age, there are about 1,400,000 of them participating in the labor market, meaning that they are either working or working.” “Job seekers,” noting that “less than a million women are currently working, 70% of whom work in the public sector, specifically teaching and services,” according to the official Al-Sabah newspaper.

She added, "According to these percentages and numbers, only between 300 and 400 thousand of them work in the private sector," stressing that "the focus during the next stage must be on women's work and entry into the private sector. The urban revolution that Iraq is witnessing today must create There are many jobs, and if such jobs do not take into account women’s demand for them, the problem of unemployment cannot be solved, because most of them lie in women’s participation in the labor market.”

She stated, "It is necessary for the jobs that will be created in the private sector, especially in the field of infrastructure, to provide decent working conditions. The solution today is to invest in women's employment. One of the suggestions is how to create a public works program that focuses on women's employment and building nurseries by the private sector." It will employ 30 to 40% of women and focus on caring for children and the elderly, and this will solve more than one problem in focusing on such sectors.”

She pointed out that "there is a problem in the labor law that hinders women's work, as it prohibits women from working in difficult and exhausting jobs without specific definitions," alerting to "the necessity of reconsidering the issue of women's work."

She explained that "the organization signed with the Iraqi government and social partners - including the Federation of Iraqi Industries and trade union federations - (the National Decent Work Program) in 2019, which covers four years, but it was extended for an additional year to prepare for the new work program, in which it was agreed to support... Three priorities are creating job opportunities and developing the private sector, enhancing social protection and combating child labour, and enhancing social dialogue and labor market governance.”

She stressed that "the organization is in the process of developing a new program, in which it reviews the things that were implemented during the last period, the most important of which is expanding work on the financial inclusion program, which helped a number of displaced women and host communities, women and youth, obtain loans through the Central Bank initiative without guarantees, as it provided This program granted about 300 loans, in addition to support from other parties to expand those covered by these loans to include segments in the governorates of Basra, Dhi Qar, and Muthanna.”

She explained that "the program will also support Iraq to design and implement a public works program that focuses on specific groups that suffer from inequality, including women, to develop the national strategy that was recently launched by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to reduce and prevent inequality. The new program will also work to expand Social security to include the largest number of workers in the private sector by focusing on workers in the informal economy in addition to supporting the development of policies and programs to reduce child labor.”
