    Shafaq News / UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, “ UNAMI “ said on Saturday that 6 million Iraqis are still living below the poverty line of about 33 million people in a country in which its annual financial budget exceeds $ 100 billion.

    The International Organization reported these numbers on the occasion of the International Day for Eradication of Poverty, and recommended to develop comprehensive policies alleviate poverty in conjunction with the state 's efforts to address security challenges .

    UNAMI said in a statement received by “Shafaq News “ that “ The United Nations wants to focus on the importance of working on eradication of poverty through sustainable development programs designed to create a more inclusive society in Iraq.

    Iraq - the second largest oil exporter in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries , exports about 2.5 million barrels per day and achieve revenues of more than $ 100 billion annually.

    However, there is a clear variation in the country in terms of salaries as a result of rampant corruption after 2003 and the absence of social justice.

    According to the Special Representative of the Secretary- General of the United Nations in Iraq, Nikolai Mladenov , Iraq is a country rich in natural and human resources , it produces three million barrels of oil a day , as its doctors and engineers are respected throughout the region .

    He added that there are six million Iraqis still living below the poverty level .

    Mladenov stressed the need to develop comprehensive policies alleviate poverty , develop sustainable livelihoods for all Iraqis in conjunction with efforts by politicians to address the security challenges .

    In 2009, the Iraqi government issued in collaboration with the World Bank , the national strategy to combat poverty in Iraq after solid studies that have shown that the percentage of poor Iraqis is more than a quarter of the population .

    The Iraqi government says that the poverty rate has declined from 22.9 % in 2007 to 18.9 % in 2012.

    Mladenov pointed out that the United Nations is working with the government and civil society organizations in Iraq to take initiatives to make income sources and enhance the level of citizens.
