    Alsumaria news/Basrah

    The
Basra Investment Commission, Monday, was surprised by the decision to
the provincial Council to prevent Kuwaiti company for implementation of
agricultural project investment, the Board considered that his decision
was based on economic and legal justification.

    He said the
Basra Investment Commission behind BADRAN said in an interview for
"alsumaria news", "the investment license granted authority to the
company (Al-Babtain) for implementation of agricultural project in
desert area includes cultivation of the tens of thousands, and hundreds
of greenhouses for seasonal crops including tomatoes", stating that "the
company started implementation of the project on an area of 11,000
acres, the provincial Council decided to abruptly stop the project and
withdraw investment license from the company."

    BADRAN noted that
"the Commission has asked the Council to explain the reasons for the
withdrawal of the licence and to prevent the company from the work on
the project but the Council did not disclose reasons", adding that "such
decisions affect the work of the Commission and worry foreign
investors, especially since the project was stopped is the largest
    agricultural project in the province."

    As Chairman of the
Committee on agriculture apologized to swadi Mohammed comment on
resolution does not possess information about him being a healthy
vacation enjoyed during the past four months, the Chairman of the
Council's economic development Committee, Mahmoud 4gayts in an interview
for "alsumaria news", that "the decision to withdraw the investment
licence of the Kuwaiti company adopted by the Council in the light of
the recommendations of the Committee formed by the Board to assess the
    project."

4gayts noted that "the Commission found that the
project leave granted by national investment authority in Baghdad, and
the initial approvals, dating back to the former regime," he said,
adding that "the company acquired under the investment license on vast
tracts of land conservation, while only a few space exploits."

    The
Chairman of the Committee stressed that "the decision to withdraw the
license based on the legal and economic grounds and was not politically
motivated", adding that "the Council aspires to promote investment in
the agricultural sector, to foreign and local investments in this sector
is virtually non-existent at the present stage."

    The agriculture
in Basra deteriorated in the past few years, and is no longer
attractive sectors for investment with the Province owns vast tracts of
arable land, according to the strategic plan for the development of the
province that began with local government by mid 2011 and extends until
2015 "Basra has at least 800,000 hectares of arable land, the size of
about 10% of the total area of the province, the exploiter of the
    500,000 acres."

The plan emphasizes preparing the United Nations
to "top threats faced by the agricultural sector to increase the
salinity of the Shatt al-Arab with the growing threat of the tongue,
salted from the Gulf, competitive imported agricultural products from
neighbouring countries, desertification and sand dune encroachment on
agricultural land, and comprehensiveness of a hydrocarbon law under
    heavy oil reservoirs.

And Basra province, about 590 kilometers
south of Baghdad, the diversity of agricultural activities, which is
famous for its desert which is located within the cutter Zubair seasonal
crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and melons yellow and red, with
unique Faw overlooking the Gulf henna bushes are planted in the northern
areas of the province hundreds of wheat fields, either in the southern
and Eastern regions, with palm groves that concentrated its intensity on
both sides of the Shatt al-Arab and its rivers, the problem of salt
penetration blowjob in the Shatt al-Arab Has doubled in recent years
from declining agriculture in the municipality of FAO and Abu al-Khasib
(South), and the Shatt al-Arab (East), with unaffected farms located in
Zubair (West) located in the desert and its reliance on categorical
groundwater, and this company (Al-Babtain) have tended to invest in the
region, according to the investment that the company was spending more
than $ 15 million on the project.
