A tough Iraqi position against Iran and the recall of its ambassador in Baghdad
I asked for a "frank and clear" clarification from Tehran through diplomatic channels regarding the attack

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed that it targeted an Israeli "strategic center" in northern Iraq, but the Kurdistan authorities denied the existence of "Israeli headquarters" in Erbil, while Tel Aviv has not yet commented on the attacks.
On Sunday, March 13, the Iraqi News Agency reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador and informed him of the government's protest against the targeting of Erbil with missiles.
A statement by the Iraqi government stated that it had requested an "open and clear" clarification from Iran through diplomatic channels regarding the attack.
And the Iraqi Ministerial Council for National Security announced, after a meeting to discuss the attack, which was launched from Iranian territory, that Iraq "is waiting for a position from the Iranian political leadership in rejecting the attack."
The AFP correspondent in Erbil reported hearing three explosions. The official Iraqi News Agency quoted the governor of Erbil as saying that "the target is unknown, whether it is the US consulate or Erbil airport," which houses a base that includes soldiers of the international coalition to combat ISIS.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service said in a statement, "At one o'clock in the morning, 12 ballistic missiles were targeted at the city of Erbil," adding, "The missiles were directed at the US Consulate in Erbil." And the Kurdistan region, specifically from the east,” noting that the attack did not result in “losses of life, except for material losses.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi condemned the attack in a tweet, saying, "The attack that targeted the dear city of Erbil and terrorized its residents is an infringement on the security of our people," and added, "Our security forces will investigate this attack."
convictions
The United States condemned the "criminal attack on civilian targets in Erbil."
"Elements of the Iranian regime have claimed responsibility for this attack, and they must be held accountable for this flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty," the US embassy in Baghdad said in a tweet.
Paris also condemned the attack "with the utmost firmness", and the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it "threatens the stability of Iraq and the region," condemning the missile attack and that such actions threaten efforts to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran.
Also, the British ambassador to Iraq, Mark Bryson Richardson, condemned the attack, saying that "there is no justification for such violence."
The leader of the Sadrist movement [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] condemned the attacks in a tweet, stressing, "Erbil will only kneel for moderation, independence and sovereignty."
Al-Sadr wrote on Twitter, "Erbil is under the crossfire of loss and betrayal... as if the Kurds were not Iraqis."
Supporting Iraq with missile defense capabilities
On Sunday, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan condemned the attack. He said that Washington is working to help Iraq obtain missile defense capabilities to defend itself.
Sullivan added on CBS that no American citizens were injured in the attack, and no American facilities were targeted, but the United States will do everything in its power to defend its people, interests and allies.
"We are consulting with the Iraqi government and the government in Iraqi Kurdistan, in part, to help them obtain missile defense capabilities to be able to defend themselves," he said.
In response to a question about the impact of this on the stalled negotiations to revive the Iran nuclear deal, Sullivan said, "The various negotiators have returned home to their capitals, and we will have to see what happens in the coming days in terms of diplomacy on the nuclear agreement."
He stated that US President Joe Biden remains firmly committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
And he added, "I will only say that the only thing more dangerous than Iran being armed with ballistic missiles and advanced military capabilities is that Tehran possesses all of that, in addition to nuclear weapons."
no victims
The Iraqi News Agency quoted the governor of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , Omid Khoshnaw, as saying: that several missiles fell on Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq.
The agency quoted the Minister of Health of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq that the Erbil explosions did not result in casualties or injuries. A US official told Reuters that there were no deaths among the American soldiers in the wake of the attack.
And the Iraqi News Agency, quoting the anti-terror forces in the Kurdistan region, stated that "Erbil was targeted using 12 ballistic missiles from outside Iraq, specifically from the east."
No other details were immediately available.
to be calm
Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the attack, saying, "Erbil will not bow to cowards. We condemn this terrorist attack that was launched on a number of Erbil regions." He added, "We ask the heroic residents of Erbil to remain calm and implement the directives of the security institutions."
Since the assassination of the former commander of the "Quds Force" Qassem Soleimani and the deputy head of the "Popular Mobilization" Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in January 2020, dozens of attacks have targeted US interests in Iraq with missiles and drones.
These attacks are usually not claimed by any party, but Washington attributes them to Iraqi pro-Iranian factions that demand the withdrawal of all US forces in Iraq within the framework of the international coalition to combat ISIS.
"combat" forces
And Iraq officially announced on the ninth of last December that the presence of foreign "combat" forces in the country ended at the end of 2021 and that the new mission of the international coalition was advisory and training only.
In late January, six missiles targeted Baghdad International Airport, in an attack that did not cause casualties, but caused damage to two empty planes.
In Erbil, the last similar attack took place in September 2021, when "exploded drones" targeted the airport. Sunday's attack comes amid a political crisis in the country, with negotiations faltering to form a parliamentary alliance, electing a president and choosing a prime minister.
