127 thousand requests for Iraqi refugees in Europe

BERLIN - The number of asylum applications registered in the EU last year was more than 1.2 million, with the Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans at the forefront, and Germany at the top of the list.
More than 1.2 million asylum seekers were registered in the European Union in 2016, close to the record in 2015, and the Syrians came first with 334,800 registered applications, followed by Afghans with 183,000, followed by 127,000 Iraqis registered. Germany is still far from the rest of the most receiving countries with 1.16 million registered asylum applications. A total of 562,000 initial applications were counted in 2014.
The year 2016 witnessed a significant decline in the number of immigrants who arrived in the Greek coast after the March migration agreement between the EU and Turkey to curb the flow of transients of the Aegean Sea.
According to International Organization for Migration figures, some 363,000 refugees arrived in Europe by sea in 2016, compared with more than 1 million in 2015.
The number of initial asylum applications published by the European Statistical Office is still high in 2016, almost the same level as in 2015, despite the decline in transients across Ige, the timeliness of asylum applications, and the delay in filing asylum claims upon arrival in Europe.
According to statistics for 2016 compared to the population, Germany recorded the largest number in front of Greece, Austria, Malta and Luxembourg. The lowest number compared to the population was recorded in Slovakia, Portugal, Romania, the Czech Republic and Estonia.
The European Central Bureau of Statistics (ECS) figures are based on initial asylum claims, ie those seeking first-time asylum in an EU country. In some cases, the European census may include requests for asylum in several European countries. Finished
