China imports US rice for the first time in its history

    Saturday 22 July

is preparing China 's largest rice producer in the world to import shipments of rice from the US, after the agreement between the two sides on a business deal in an unprecedented step.

"The agreement reached with China is the result of negotiations between the two sides for more than 10 years," US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement, adding that the deal would benefit American farmers.

Although its rice production is more than 20 times that of the United States, China is also the world's largest rice consumer, which has recently pushed for more rice from abroad. According to US Department of Agriculture data , China imported about 5 million tons of rice Rice during the past year.

The United States alone can not meet China's demand for rice, as its exports usually range from 3 to 4 million tons per year. In the past, China alone was able to feed itself and was self-sufficient in rice, but the situation changed with the aging of Rural communities and reduced crop yields as a result of climate change.
