The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened an investigation into the circumstances of a person who shocked a crowd of demonstrators in his car in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing three people and injuring others.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Richmond, Virginia, said in a statement that it had opened an investigation into "the circumstances of the fatal accident" on Saturday in Charlottesville.
Authorities said three people were killed Saturday in Charlottesville, including a woman who died when a car hit a group of people who took part in a demonstration in the city to denounce the extreme right.
It later emerged that the two other victims were police officers who crashed their helicopter in a forest area near Charlottesville, police said in a statement.
The security forces were initially unable to contain the clashes in Charlottesville between supporters and opponents of the extreme right.
The crash prompted US President Donald Trump to condemn the violence, but he avoided taking responsibility for far-right supporters or opponents.
