Taiwan appoints new prime minister amid tension with China

Taiwan President Cai Ing-wen on Tuesday appointed William Lay as the new prime minister to succeed Lin Chuan in hopes of reaching out to China amid tense relations between the two countries.

"Lai was appointed prime minister following Chuan's resignation on Monday," the Taiwan president said at a news conference.

She noted that "Chuan asked to leave his post before the local elections scheduled for next year."

China has severed ties with the government of Cai Ing-wen more than a year ago, after the latter refused to recognize Taiwan as Chinese territory.

William Lay, 57, is a doctor who studied at Harvard University and has been mayor of Tainan since 2010.

Taiwan was founded by Chiang Kai-shek and members of his national government, who fled China after Mao Zedong came to power in 1949.

The Beijing government does not recognize Taiwan independence and pursues a policy called "united China" which states that both the mainland and Taiwan are one entity, both of which are China's motherland.
