     Follow-up / Sky Press:

Various countries around the world are witnessing security threats on the eve of New Year's Eve, as fears of terrorist attacks escalate.

US police departments have vowed to tighten security ahead of New Year celebrations.

The New York City Police Department said it would beef up security at the celebration venue on Sunday night.

"The NYPD and its law enforcement partners will increase the number of surveillance centers throughout Times Square for proactive surveillance," the department said on its Web site.

The heightened security measures followed the October 1 massacre in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a gunman firing from a distance from a hotel window on the 32nd floor killed more than 50 people at a music festival.

"There are no direct, credible threats to New York City or Times Square," New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

In Las Vegas, police deploy surveillance teams and snipers on rooftops during New Year's Eve celebrations on the famous Las Vegas strip, police chief Joe Lombardo announced this week.

More than 300 members of the National Guard and 1,500 police will be present in Las Vegas.

In Los Angeles, fireworks, shooting and unlawful celebration will be launched throughout the city, the Los Angeles Police Department said Friday, and instead encouraged citizens to attend public fireworks.

The French Ministry of the Interior announced that it would deploy a large number of security men in various markets, and the places of the French celebration on New Year's Eve, especially the Avenue "Shan Elysees", to address any terrorist threat.

"To provide security on the night of December 31, there are 56,000 police officers, 36,000 motorists, 7,000 troops and 39,800 firefighters, a total of 139,400 security personnel to be deployed on all French soil," the statement said.

According to the communiqué, these measures were taken to protect citizens and tourists "in supermarkets and places of assembly" in order to counter terrorism, as well as the protection of public property, by addressing alcohol-driven driving and violent events.

In Turkey, authorities continued to pursue prosecutions accused of belonging to the Da'sh organization, particularly in Istanbul and Ankara.

The arrest of 75 people suspected of belonging to the "Dahesh" in the city, confirming the continued search for 17 people believed to be in Ankara.

The authorities said the detainees were planning attacks on New Year's Eve revelers.

European countries witnessed several security preparations and intensive intelligence efforts on the eve of the celebrations, especially Germany, Belgium, Britain and Russia.

Earlier, the Russian authorities had announced the overthrow of a secret cell that had planned attacks on New Year's Eve celebrations.

The announcement coincides with the adoption of the "Dahesh" terrorist attack targeting, on Wednesday, a shopping center in the city of Saint Petersburg, wounding 13 people.

The situation is not so different in several Arab countries. In Egypt, the terrorist attack on a church was darkened on the eve of the New Year.

Ten people, including eight Christians, were killed and five others wounded in two armed attacks targeting the Marminna church and a Christian-owned shop south of Cairo, official sources said.

Egypt is witnessing intensive security preparedness for fear of similar terrorist attacks, especially on the night of Ras.

The world has been a busy year at all levels, but those associated with terrorist attacks have been the most prominent, raising the fears of several countries that the reception of the new year will be a continuation of a black chapter, instead of opening a new page.
