Japanese officials called on the United States on Tuesday to take comprehensive measures to protect Japanese citizens, a day after a US helicopter landed on a hotel floor on the southern island of Okinawa.
The emergency landing came days after a similar incident, the latest in a series of incidents of US military aircraft in Okinawa, which increased public opposition to the US presence there.
Japanese Defense Minister Itzunori Onudera told a news conference that he called on the United States during a telephone conversation in the morning with his US counterpart James Matisse to prevent such incidents from recurring.
"We ask the United States to take comprehensive action," he said, adding that he intended to repeat the message when he met with Harry Harris, commander of US forces in Asia and the Pacific, later this week.
Japanese media reported that Matisse apologized for the latest incident but Unodera did not mention it, although he said he felt Matisse was "fully aware" of the issue.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihida Suga reiterated Uno'ira's concerns and noted at a news conference the importance of US-Japan deterrence measures in view of the tense security situation in the region, but added that the understanding and cooperation of Japanese citizens is necessary for the US military to do its job well.
"These incidents, which cause fear among a part of the local population, should not occur."
Discontent is growing among residents of the island in southern Japan, complaining of what they see as an unnecessary burden to support a US military presence in the country.
Among recent incidents, a US Marine helicopter was forced to land on a beach in Okinawa on Saturday because of a technical malfunction. Before that, a glass window fell from a military plane in a school playground on the island.
Okinawa, strategically located on the edge of the East China Sea and under US occupation until 1972, hosts about 30,000 US troops living and working in military bases covering one fifth of the island.
