[ltr]NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York-based civil rights group has filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump's administration for what it said was a long-term detention of migrant children and said recent shifts in US government policy were the reason why children were held illegally.[/ltr]
[ltr]The New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the case with the Federal Court of Manhattan, seeks to represent a group of children held by the New York Office of Refugee Resettlement. The federation said at least 40 children were there.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment.[/ltr]
[ltr]US President Donald Trump of the Republican Party has made the issue of reducing immigration and the illegal expulsion of immigrants living in the United States the center of his program.[/ltr]
[ltr]Most of the children detained by the Office of Refugee Resettlement were detained by the immigration authorities after entering the country illegally without an adult.[/ltr]
[ltr]Under federal law, children with relatives in the United States who are eligible for care are presumed to be released pending a determination of their immigration issues.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the Civil Liberties Union in New York, the main prosecutor in the case is a 17-year-old boy who came to the United States in 2016 from El Salvador with his mother and brother to escape gang violence and the family asked for asylum.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the lawsuit, the Immigration and Customs Authority took the boy from his home in Long Island in July 2017 and detained him on the basis of police reports that he was involved with a gang. The Civil Liberties Union said the reports were incorrect.[/ltr]
[ltr]The documents say the boy has been held by the Refugee Resettlement Office for about seven months, although an immigration judge and a local supervisor at the resettlement office have determined the boy poses no threat.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The Trump administration degrades these children at risk and targets them in flagrant violation of laws and policies aimed at their protection," the lawsuit said.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Civil Liberties Union in New York seeks to represent "all children detained or held at the New York resettlement office" in safe facilities.[/ltr]

A New York civil rights organization filed a lawsuit against US administration officials accused of causing long-term detention of migrant children.

The organization said that "the recent changes in the policy of the US government is the reason for the unjust detention of children."

The lawsuit claims that the administration of US President Donald Trump demeans these vulnerable children and targets them in flagrant violation of laws and policies aimed at their protection.

The New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the case with the Federal District Court of Manhattan, seeks to represent a group of 40 detained children at the Refugee Resettlement Office in New York.

Under federal law, children with relatives in the United States who have the possibility of being cared for must be released pending a determination of their immigration issues.
