(AFP) - A white van killed at least nine people after climbing a pier in a suburb of Toronto, police said on Monday, confirming the driver's detention.
Some 16 people were injured in an accident that did not know how serious they were.
Police in Canada's largest city had initially said eight to 10 people had been wounded, but later made it clear that it was not known exactly how many or how serious the injuries were.
Police arrested the driver of the wheel, whose motives for the incident were not yet known if he was linked to terrorism or an advocate.
"The collision" took place at 13:27 local time (17:27 GMT), the AFP news agency reported

10 people were killed and 15 others injured after a truck ran over a crowd of pedestrians in the Canadian city of Toronto, police said on Monday.

The authorities said the suspect's name was Alec Minasian, 25, and official sources denied any links to any organized terrorist group.
The accident occurred when the truck overtook the pier and trampled the infantry and then fled the scene at a busy intersection north of the Canadian city, police said.
The truck was found several blocks away from the accident, and its driver was arrested, according to local media.
The videotapes of the passer-by showed the driver of the vehicle pointing to the officers who were shouting at him and ordered him to get out of the car.
Peter Yuen, deputy director of the Toronto police, asked witnesses to testify and said a "lengthy investigation" would be conducted.
He added that hot lines were allocated to families of victims and witnesses.
Canadian Secretary of Public Security Ralph Gudel said in a tweet in which he thanked emergency services and referred to the incident as a "horrific attack."
The accident took place at the intersection of Young Street and Finch Avenue streets at 13:30 local time (1730 GMT) Monday, about 30 kilometers from the city center, where foreign ministers of the seven industrialized nations are holding meetings.
The United States and Canada have seen an increase in car attacks in recent years.
In October 2017, a man drove a truck on a bicycle lane in New York and killed eight people.
