The Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday praised the holding of parliamentary elections in Iraq on schedule and expressed the hope that the country will witness the formation of an effective government as soon as possible.
"We respect the sovereign choice of the Iraqi people," the foreign ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Monday. "We express the hope that an effective government will be formed in Iraq and that the responsible political forces and sectarian and ethnic groups will be able to work with Bufaq, And reject the narrow aspirations to achieve the overall national goals.
The statement added that "Moscow considers the first parliamentary elections in Iraq after a defeat in a timely manner, an important milestone on the road to stabilize the country and strengthen its democratic institutions."
He added that although the collection of election results was not completed, it can be confirmed that the efforts of the Iraqi government to organize and conduct the election on all the territory of the country and ensure the safety of voters, deserve high recognition.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed Moscow's readiness "to continue to provide effective support to a friendly Iraq" in addressing international terrorism, and contribute to its tangible contribution to the development of Russian-Iraqi cooperation.
