(Baghdad: Al Furat News) Border guards have begun building a security fence and building observation towers along the border with Syria in the west of the country.
"Ten days ago, work began to put in place a security fence, which is barbed wire and watchtowers along the border with Syria," Anwar Hamid Nayef, spokesman for the Anbar province's border police command, told AFP.
"This is the first stage of 20 kilometers and separates each tower and the distance of one kilometer, which is intended to monitor and repel terrorist attacks," he said, adding that the work "started from the Qaim area to the north."
"It will also be dug a trench six meters wide and three meters deep, in addition to the use of marching aircraft to monitor the border accurately."
Regarding the remaining areas along the 600-kilometer frontier, Nayef said, "Committees from the Ministry of Defense and the International Alliance will visit the site to determine the feasibility of the fence. If the operation succeeds, the fence will continue to be erected on the entire border with Syria."
