Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi referred a number of ministers and officials to the Integrity Commission on charges of corruption.

Abadi's decisions coincide with massive protests in central and southern cities and towns for nearly a month demanding protesters improve services and fight rampant corruption in the country.

Although Iraq is the second largest producer of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and receives tens of billions of dollars a year from the sale of crude, but Iraqi governments are still unable to provide basic services to the population.

Corruption has major negative implications for Iraq's development, including foreign investors' considerable pressure on their businesses in that country.

The correlation of corruption in Iraq has been the focus of international institutions before local and regional.

In 2017, Iraq ranked 169th among 180 countries on Transparency International's corruption index.

The Corruption Perception Index classifies countries and regions on the basis of the extent of their public sector corruption.

Iraq scored the highest level of corruption in 2007 (178) while the lowest level in 2003 (113)

. Transparency International uses a scale of zero to 100, which means zero "very corrupt" and 100 "very clean".

Many Iraqis fully believe that they live in the most corrupt countries in the world.

The Iraqi Integrity Commission affiliated with parliament acknowledged that Iraq has lost about $ 320 billion in government corruption in the past 15 years.

Since its establishment several years ago, it has received thousands of cases related to corruption. In the first quarter of this year, it reached 9832, of which 4,443 were resolved.

Corruption has pushed the supreme authority of Iraq's Shiites, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, to set guidelines for the next government to ease the economic crisis and fight corruption, including the removal of the corrupt from power.

Human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have accused the Iraqi authorities of putting heavy pressure on the media about corruption.

Those involved in corruption in Iraq usually end up fleeing to the country or free from outside bars under the "amnesty law."
