US Vice President Mike Pence is trying to persuade Paraguay to keep its embassy in Israel in Jerusalem and not return it to Tel Aviv.

The White House said Thursday that Bens strongly encouraged Paraguayan President Abdo Benitez to carry out his country's previous commitment to transfer the embassy to Jerusalem, in recognition of the historic relationship maintained by the country with both Israel and the United States.

The President of Paraguay replied that his country would remain a permanent partner of Israel. The two men decided to work towards a solution to the Middle East conflict.

The Government of Paraguay pledged to contribute to the intensification of regional and international diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

After Paraguay launched its embassy in Jerusalem last May, the United States changed its decision and announced last Wednesday that the embassy would be re-established in Tel Aviv, which angered Israel, which closed its embassy in Paraguay's capital Asunción.

Commenting on Paraguay's move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the "disappointing decision" which is "very serious" and "damages the bilateral relations between the two countries."
