Abbas meets Israeli opposition leader in New York
stressed the Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni, during her meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas , on the sidelines of the meetings of the United Nations in New York , the need for the return of dialogue between the Authority and Washington.
Livni called on the Palestinian president to return to the table of dialogue with the United States, based on the two-state solution, a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside Israel , noting the seriousness of the situation.
"The opposition and the majority of the Israeli public support the two-state principle, but we will oppose any unilateral action in international forums against Israel," Livni said.
"Financing the families of terrorists and proceedings at the Criminal Court in The Hague is unacceptable, leading to loss of confidence and strengthening extremists," she said.
Livni explained that the purpose of the meeting with President Abbas is to stop further deterioration of security between Israel and the Palestinian Authority , and try to renew negotiations.
"The solution to the crisis in Gaza is through the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Gaza Strip and not by legitimizing a terrorist organization like Hamas," Livni said at the start of the meeting.
The Palestinian president and the Israeli prime minister are scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
