Following its announcement not to recognize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's recent re-election, the United States called for the formation of a new government in Venezuela.
"The people of Venezuela deserve to live freely in a democratic society ruled by a state of law," State Department spokesman Robert Paladino said in a statement.
"It is time to start a quiet transition to a new government and support the call of the National Assembly to all Venezuelans to work together peacefully to form a constitutional government and build a better future," Paladino said.
For his part, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, that developments in Venezuela "very important."
"The Maduro regime is illegal and the United States has been doing everything in its power to bring about the effective return of democracy to this country two years ago," Pompeo said during a visit to Abu Dhabi.
White House national security adviser John Bolton said last Thursday that the United States would not recognize Maduro's legitimacy. "We will continue to increase pressure on this corrupt system, support the National Democratic Assembly and call for freedom and democracy in Venezuela," White House national security adviser John Bolton said Thursday.
During an emergency meeting on the situation in Venezuela, the Organization of American States (OAS) refused to recognize the legitimacy of Maduro's government and called for new presidential elections "with all the guarantees necessary for a free, fair, transparent and legitimate process."
President Maduro was reelected on May 20 last year in an opposition boycott and was sworn in last Thursday for a second six-year term, coinciding with a call by the opposition, which controls parliament, to mobilize on Jan. 23 to demand a "transitional government" 3
