Iranian President Hassan Rowhani and his accompanying delegation arrived in Baghdad on Monday for their first visit to Iraq since taking office since 2013.
An informed source told Shafak News that Foreign Minister Mohammad Ali al-Hakim was received at Baghdad International Airport.
The source added that Rouhani immediately went to the city of Kadhimiya to visit the two imams before his official reception by President Barham Salih at the Peace Palace
The Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Jawad Zarif, arrived Sunday to the Iraqi capital Baghdad, in preparation for the visit Rohani, which begins today and lasts three days.
Rohani is expected to meet with his Iraqi counterpart Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and Iraq's Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani.
Sistani, who has consistently rejected Iranian interference in Iraq and denounces the idea of the Wilayat al-Faqih, was rejected by former Iranian president Ahmadinejad when he visited Iraq in 2008 and refused to meet the envoy of the regime's leader, Ali Khamenei, two years ago.
The idea of a spiritual meeting with Sistani again faces rejection by the hardline movement in Iran, for Sistani's repeated embarrassment of the regime.
The hardline spiritual trend also carries responsibility for the country's economic crisis and plans to hold it accountable publicly.
