    Shortly after Iran was hit by floods and torrential rains, large swarms of locusts swept through vast tracts of agricultural land in six Iranian provinces, local news agency Fars reported Sunday. 
    "The desert locust has invaded 200,000 hectares in six provinces of the country," the agency quoted Assistant Director of Agricultural Pests of the Iranian Plant Conservation Organization Ali Murad Sarafrazi as saying. "The control is now underway in 50,000 hectares."

    According to the Iranian official, is coordinating with an airline to spray pesticides on land affected by the air.

    An estimated 4.5 million tonnes of crops in South Kerman are estimated to be affected by the locust invasion.

    The locust problem comes after torrential rain and rain, which took large parts of Iran in early April, caused millions of dollars in damage to agricultural activity.
