US protests against decision to close channels in Iraq: not in line with government duty

The US embassy in Baghdad on Thursday denounced measures threatening media freedom in Iraq, particularly the recent decision by the Iraqi Media and Communications Commission (CMC) to suspend the license to operate nine satellite channels and warn others that they "may face the same fate."
"The recent decision by the Iraqi Media and Communications Commission to close the headquarters of the Tigris satellite channel in Baghdad on November 26 does not comply with the Iraqi government's duty to uphold the right to freedom of expression, protect journalists, and accept divergent views that may differ," the embassy said in a statement. "Freedom of expression is the cornerstone of democratic societies. "Respecting and supporting the right of journalists to perform their duties without harassment is essential to protect and promote democracy and safeguard the freedoms and rights of societies," the statement said.
The CMC issued a decision to close 8 satellite TV stations, 4 radio stations and 5 other satellite channels under the pretext of violating professional codes of conduct.
The Commission decided to close the offices of Arab satellite channels Hadath, NRT, ANB, Tigris, Sharqiya, Fallujah, Al-Rasheed, Hana Baghdad, for three months, and to close radio stations (Radio Al-Nas, Sawa, Radio Al-Youm, Noa, Al-Hurra Iraq) for the same pretext, as well as directing Final alerts for (Alsumaria, Asia, Rudaw, Sky News, Ur channel).
It also decided to extend the closure of Al Hurra for another three months.
The Association for the Defense of Press Freedom expressed concern about what it described as dictatorial behavior, as it considered what constituted a legal and constitutional violation, since the Order 65, according to which the organization works to obtain a judicial order, before issuing a decision to close any office, station or headquarters of the media. This mass closure constitutes an explicit constitutional violation of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press, media, advertising and publication in all its forms.

The Assembly appeals to the free world to protect the remaining freedom of the media and press in Iraq, and to provide them with the necessary protection.
