Baghdad - Mawazine News
The US State Department announced on Friday that it will ask the Treasury Department to include Iraqi officials on the sanctions list.
The State Department confirmed that "Washington will not remain silent on the killing of demonstrators in Iraq."
Hours ago, with the increase in violence against demonstrators in Iraq, especially in the southern governorates where dozens have fallen within one day, American sources indicated earlier that Washington intends to impose sanctions on Iraqi officials, pointing out that it will be announced within hours.
The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said that his country will use its legal powers to impose "sanctions on corrupt personalities, stealing the wealth of Iraqis, and on those who kill and injure civilian protesters."
The US Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, David Schenker, has brandished sanctions that Washington may soon impose against officials for what he described as "atrocities in Iraq", denouncing the appalling and heinous use of force against demonstrators.
This comes as sources from the medical detachments deployed in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad said that unknown elements belonging to political parties in the Authority carried out stabbings against the demonstrators Thursday morning. Ended / 29 / h

Washington delegate to the United Nations: It is important that Abdul-Mahdi be held accountable after his resignation

On Friday, the US delegate to the United Nations, Kelly Kraft, stressed the need to hold the resigned prime minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, to account.
"The Iraqi authorities cannot use violence against peaceful demonstrators," Kelly Kraft said at a press conference, noting that "we will have an emergency session on Iraq, and we will not accept any violations against the demonstrators."
"It is important that the Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, be held accountable, after his resignation," Kraft added, adding that "there are consultations regarding Iraq, and it is very important that we speak frankly and from the heart of what is going on in Iraq."
The international actress, Jenin Blackshart, said during her speech at the Security Council (Tuesday, 3 December) that Iraqi youth are leading protests away from partisan interests and the authorities have used excessive force.
In her testimony on Iraq before the UN Security Council, Blackshart said, "The current situation in Iraq carries accumulations and there is a strong sense of frustration," noting that "Iraqi youth are leading protests away from partisan interests and the authorities have used excessive force."
She pointed out that there are "unidentified people shooting at the protesters," stressing that "the live shooting is still going on."
It warned that "the closure of the media and the Internet suggests that the Iraqi authorities want to hide something," noting that "the majority of the demonstrators are peaceful and the state is responsible for protecting its people."
Blackshart continued: "The current situation represents a major challenge for the government," adding: "We have heard many promises to fight corruption in Iraq without progress."
"Initiatives to make dialogue succeed", she suggested, but "the protesters are demanding an end to the killings."
She explained: "We have proposed initiatives to make the dialogue succeed, but the protesters are stipulating an end to the killings," noting that "there is a collective responsibility for what is happening in Iraq to all in power and not the government alone, and we have heard many promises to combat corruption in Iraq without making progress."
And last Sunday, the House of Representatives approved the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi from his post, which he submitted after the Supreme Religious Authority called, last Friday, Parliament to reconsider its confidence in the government, against the backdrop of killing dozens of demonstrators and injuring hundreds during the past few days In Najaf and Dhi Qar.
Baghdad and the governorates of the center and south are witnessing demonstrations, since last October 1, and are still continuing until now, to demand the departure of the ruling elite accused of corruption on a large scale. During this period, more than 400 demonstrators were killed and thousands were injured, in addition to security personnel.
