The director of the company, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a press statement, "The infrastructure and the aging of it makes it need to be completely modernized, which could cost the state billions of dollars."
And he indicated that "referring the port to retirement is due to the fact that its work has now become harmful to the people of Basra in terms of the marine environment and the air."
Al-Fartousi pointed out that "work is underway to transform the port into a river tourist resort, while preserving the port's urban facade."
He continued, "The company is in the process of negotiating with a number of companies, none of which has been identified, to transform the commercial port into a tourist destination for the people of Basra as soon as possible."
