Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that it had discussed with a delegation from the International Trade Center ITC to discuss a project to study value chains for a number of Iraqi agricultural products, while it identified two conditions to open and prevent the import of agricultural products in Iraq.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mahdi al-Jubouri, said in a statement to the official agency, followed by the “National News Center”: “Within the activities of the Ministry of Agriculture with international organizations in finding means of support and development for the agricultural sector, a delegation from the International Trade Center ITC was discussed to discuss the value chain study project for a number of of Iraqi agricultural products and funded by the European Union, which contributes to increasing the contribution of the agricultural sector to the gross domestic product.
He added, "This project included focusing on identifying the most important and important agricultural commodities in the Iraqi market, including potatoes, tomatoes, poultry, table eggs and red meat as basic products in the study project."
He added, "This study is gaining importance in studying the value chains of the targeted products, starting from the stage of production costs and finding mechanisms to reduce these costs and the best production methods with economic efficiency and ending with the marketing stage and focus on raising the marketing efficiency of the targeted agricultural commodities, thus providing additional job opportunities and contributing to raising local production. Through its contribution to increasing the contribution of the agricultural sector, both plant and animal, to the gross domestic product.
And he continued: “As for the prevention and opening of the import of agricultural products, this depends on the agricultural calendar, which has been updated recently, depending on production variables and modern means of production, especially covered agriculture, which led to the prolongation of the seasons of agricultural production for vegetable crops in Iraq.”
He pointed out that “the ministry monitors the local markets, and in the event that the local product is scarce and prices rise, imports are opened, but in the event of abundant production, import is closed in support of the local agricultural product.”
