Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
With the high rates of population growth that Iraq has been witnessing for about 10 years, and the decline in the levels of the economy and development, and the attendant poor services and stable life opportunities, there were calls that appeared and faded from time to time calling for plans and remedies for the economic reality.
According to specialists and observers, the population explosion is not Iraq's problem as much as the lack of realistic plans and poor planning to contain this crisis and maintain a population balance.
According to United Nations statistics for 2020, Iraq ranks 36th in the world in terms of population, and 4th among Arab countries.
A World Bank report indicates that about 13 million Iraqis earn less than two dollars a day, and the poverty rate in Iraq, according to the Ministry of Planning, reached 25%, while Iraqi data and reports on development and strategies speak of close to 30%.
The economic advisor to the Prime Minister, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, believes that "the population increase in Iraq during the last decade has become the most important challenge facing the economy in light of maintaining oil as a major and essential source in the rotation of the movement of pensions and the provision of salaries."
Salih adds that “the levels of population increase in Iraq still indicate a high growth of about 2.6% annually, which is the highest in the world,” noting that “delivery and enhancing confidence in the national inputs from oil cannot be relied upon as much because renewable energy will decrease in the near future.” from reliance on fossil sources.
And Saleh added, "There are 8 million Iraqis who receive salaries or grants from the state, meaning that the recipients of the income guarantee the livelihood of five individuals almost completely."
In turn, a member of the Committee on Economy and Investment in the former parliament, Nada Shaker Jawdat, says that "Iraq does not suffer from a population crisis, but the reason for the complexity is due to poor planning and the absence of economic vision and management over the successive governments that Iraq lived in after 2003."
She adds that "the capabilities are available and Iraq is floating on a sea of oil," noting that "Iraq is an agricultural country in the first place, but mismanagement led to its elimination in addition to the almost non-existent industry."
Jawdat believes, "Investing in the agricultural and industrial sectors, in addition to investing in oil, will lead us to a booming economy and stable investment that ends unemployment, suicide problems and poverty crises, which leads to an end to the issue of the population explosion."
And the former member of parliament indicated, "Tackling the economy and developing realistic solutions that take us to import workers from abroad, the opposite of what we are now," stressing that "Iraq has the ability to contain more than the numbers of the current population in the event that there is a correct administration and political will."
For his part, the economic specialist, Younis Al-Kaabi, says, “Successive governments have completely neglected the issue of population growth and the absence of plans and programs in line with the increase in the population, which led to serious societal problems that Iraqi society is not accustomed to, including the spread of drugs, whether through abuse or trade, as well as human trafficking. And murders, and other problems that Iraqi society suffers from, which led to a rise in the poverty rate to more than 30%.”
Al-Kaabi called on the upcoming parliament and government to "develop plans and programs to confront the increase in the population in light of the absence of plans, which led to societal problems and the spread of crime."
He pointed out that "the electoral programs of the political parties have been completely absent from the development of programs and plans to accommodate the increase in the population."
The United Nations Population Fund had warned of the acceleration of population growth in Iraq, and the doubling of the youth segment to more than 60 percent of the population, calling on families to plan and learn to control their expansion and growth by following the tools and methods of preventing reproduction, with access to the economic opportunities that Allows the healthy development of children
