In light of the recent exacerbation of seismic events and the severity of the country being affected by them, the Geologists Syndicate called for a comprehensive examination of dams, strategic infrastructure and tall buildings to ensure their safety, and warned against underestimating the dangers of earthquakes.
Since yesterday, the cities of Erbil and Mosul have witnessed multiple earthquakes, one with a magnitude of 4.6 and the other with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale.
The head of the Geologists Syndicate, Saad Obaid, said in a statement to "Al-Sabah": Iraq occupies a location adjacent to the seismic belts of Zagros and Taurus, where the Arab and Eurasian plates collide, and their seismic activity poses significant risks to the country. He explained that the Syndicate recently held a panel discussion on seismic activities and sciences, with the participation of representatives of the relevant ministries and agencies, which resulted in making recommendations in many axes, including infrastructure, seismic monitoring, building and construction, awareness, media and civil defence.
The most important recommendations, according to Obeid, included conducting a comprehensive examination of dams and strategic infrastructure to ensure their safety from recent earthquakes and tremors, as well as reviewing the dams' need for seismic devices to assess their condition, updating seismic maps and maps of the possibility of earthquakes occurring in the country and neighboring regions, which give an idea of the possibility of their recurrence over the years. The coming events, especially the severe ones, with the use of satellite radar image analysis techniques in the field of knowing the movement of faults and the use of artificial intelligence techniques in the field of seismic information analysis, as well as increasing the number of seismic stations to cover the entire area of Iraq, especially the areas close to its activity and the areas of dams.
He added that the recommendations also included the need to form specialized committees with expertise and specialization to count and examine buildings and engineering projects in terms of construction, design, implementation and building materials, and to take strict measures and instructions when granting building permits for projects that are characterized by a high population density such as hospitals, stadiums, malls, etc., and the use of construction and seismic building standards. And interest in engineering supervision of projects and the use of appropriate building materials, as well as monitoring and counting old and archaeological buildings and structures to maintain and strengthen them.
