{Politics: Al-Furat News} Today, Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani revealed the latest developments regarding the cessation of oil exports from the Kurdistan region, pointing to “the complex relationship between America and Iran and its impact on Iraq.”
Al-Sudani said during his participation in a dialogue symposium held by the American institutions Al-Monitor and Semaphore, and attended by a number of media outlets and a group of researchers, which dealt with various political and economic issues related to Iraqi affairs, that “the political forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan region are an essential part of the state administration coalition that formed the government, and there is a political agreement.” “For general principles voted on by the House of Representatives and adopted by the government that implements these commitments.”
He stated that "financing the region from the budget is linked to previous financial problems facing the region, which clearly emerged after stopping the export of oil through the Turkish port of Ceyhan, and due to limitations and difficulties in the budget law for the year 2023," noting that "the federal government dealt with a responsible stance, as the region is an integral part of “Iraq and our moral and national responsibility towards its citizens are the same responsibility with the citizens in the southern or central governorates.”
He explained, "We found the solution and announced it after the visit of the delegation of the Iraqi Kurdistan region. The solution came from Baghdad and not from outside, and with the presence of understanding, dialogue, and acknowledgment of these obligations and legal limitations, we will find solutions to all problems. We launched funding that will continue until the end of this year, and financial settlements will be made before the end of the year, and the dialogues We are proceeding with other obligations, including discussing the draft oil and gas law.”
Al-Sudani continued, "There is no political crisis, but there are financial and legal problems that were resolved in the latest action of the Council of Ministers, and in every meeting with an American official, we stress the importance of the presence of American companies in various sectors, especially in the energy file, which is linked to other problems such as determining gas, Iranian gas dues, and others." ".
He pointed out that "there is an opportunity to solve a problem that represents a crisis in our relations with the United States of America and with Iran, especially with regard to the recent Iranian gas dues. This government is based on institutional work, a diversified economy, and a real fight against corruption. It is also based on law enforcement and the independence of the judiciary." For each of them, there is a practical achievement for the government during the past months.”
Al-Sudani noted, "The time has come for American companies to enter the Iraqi market, especially the energy market. Iraq is an important and pivotal country in the global energy market, and soon it will be a country in the gas market through natural and associated gas investments."
He went on to say, "We burn 1,300 million cubic feet of gas every day, and we import from Iran a thousand million cubic feet. The burned costs us 4-5 billion dollars, and the imported cost us about 4 billion dollars. The natural and associated gas was not even invested by the governments before 2003, and the government completed projects." "It is important in the gas sector, which will enable us to export gas in the future."
He stressed, "We have completed the Total agreement and the fifth round agreement with Emirati and Chinese companies, and we have a national effort, in addition to the sixth round currently presented to international companies, and we plan for Iraq to be a gas exporting country, in light of the size of the huge reserves of natural gas that have not been invested in the history of Iraq, and we are a country." It produces 4,652,000 barrels per day, and imagine the amount of gas associated with this production, which constitutes wasted wealth. The government has laid the correct foundations for investing it.”
The Prime Minister noted that "the government has prepared a future vision linked to the strategic development road project, which will be a corridor accompanying the road and railway, and there is a line to transport oil and gas to Turkey and Europe, and exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan stopped after the decision of the International Arbitration Court, which issued a ruling in favor of Iraq." .
He stressed, "The Turkish side made clear the existence of technical problems, and we waited for their confirmation of the extent of the technical problems in the pipeline, and we are awaiting notification from the Turkish side to resume export, because stopping it violates the origin of the agreement between Iraq and Turkey in 1973."
Al-Sudani revealed, "Iraq loses about 470,000 barrels daily due to the cessation of exports from the Turkish line, a number that affects the size of budget revenues."
He said, "We face a problem in the relationship between Iraq, Iran, and America, as if we are the only country between the two countries, and there are those who assume that in order to be a friend of America, you must speak ill of Iran, and vice versa. There are Arab countries that have distinct and strategic relations with the two countries, so why does Iraq not have this balance?" In the relationship? Iran is a neighboring country with which we have borders exceeding 2,200 km, and we have common interests with them.”
He continued by saying, "A few weeks ago, Iraq welcomed more than 3 million Iranian visitors during the fortieth visit. The Iraqis received them in their homes, and this is a religious commonality that cannot be ignored. Iran has supported the political process since 2003 and supports efforts to combat terrorism, and America is a strategic partner and participated in the war efforts against ISIS." On this basis, we build our policies and relations.”
He stated, "The common interests of Iraq are the compass by which we move, and we do not submit to the desires of others. What serves our national interest we consider to be the optimal path for our foreign policy. Iraq played a role in bringing viewpoints closer between opposing countries, which was clearly reflected in the stability of the region, and we do not want Iraq to be An arena for settling conflicts, as this will not serve Iraq and the countries of the region.”
He noted, "The sensitivity of our region requires this balanced, independent policy that represents the appointed role of Iraqi diplomacy. Iraq's sacrifices are for a political system based on the principles of human rights and the optimal investment of its resources, which have not been invested to date. Iraq is one of the young countries, and our youth are sacrificing patriots who advanced the ranks during the battle." ISIS, and in study and creativity, which gives us a great responsibility in shaping their future.”
