The Veterinary Department revealed that the total financial losses incurred by livestock breeders and the country's economy due to foot-and-mouth disease since its appearance last year until now have reached 540 billion dinars, due to the failure to provide vaccines so far, warning of an escalation in the number of infections during the next two months.
Director of the Epidemiology Department in the department affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Thaer Sabri Hussein, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: The total number of livestock infected with the disease since its appearance last year has reached five thousand and 982, of which 515 died during the first four months of the current year, due to the severity of the infections. Within Baghdad and Nineveh Governorate, large numbers of cows, livestock and calves were injured in Nineveh and Baghdad Governorates.
He revealed that the value of the material losses inflicted on livestock breeders and the country's economy due to the disease since its appearance last year until now has reached 540 billion dinars, as a result of the failure to provide its vaccines, which the Ministry of Agriculture was supposed to provide against the backdrop of the many demands of his department for them before the disease worsened further, however. So far, there has been no response from them, warning of an escalation in the number of infections over the next two months.
Hussein stated that foot-and-mouth disease, which is an endemic disease in Iraq, is transmitted rapidly between buffalo, cows, sheep, and goats, and its economic impact is devastating, due to the high mortality rates of newborn animals. It is spread through salivary secretions, through air contaminated with the virus, and through the mixing of workers and farmers with animals and contaminated fodder. Noting that prevention is limited to vaccinations periodically twice a year, he noted at the same time that the disease does not pose a threat to human health when eating cooked meat of infected animals.
