[Asharq Al-Awsat] The Iraqi government has said that it is seeking to remove the Turkish forces from its territory by diplomatic means, to return the issue of Turkish excesses in Iraq to the forefront again.
"The Iraqi government is aware that the presence of Turkish forces on its territory has a negative impact on the security and stability of the two countries, and seeks to end the Turkish presence on its territory by diplomatic means," said Abdul Karim Hashem, director of the Iraqi prime minister's office.
"The number of international coalition forces in Iraq as of December last, 8956 people, including 6132 US forces as advisers, trainers, support and air support."
The document, which was detailed at the request of the MP in the Iraqi parliament, Faleh Hassan Jassem of the National Sindh bloc, that the strategic framework agreement signed between Iraq and the United States of America at the end of 2008 did not specify the duration of these forces, pointing to the organization of activities during the presence of US forces In Iraq temporarily.
Shiite blocs and factions represented by the Iraqi parliament are calling for a law that would allow foreign troops to be removed from Iraq, which is rejected by Sunni currents that see the threat still surrounds Iraq from terrorist groups.
The Iraqi efforts came at a time when the Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Monday that it intensified its military campaign against PKK rebels in the Labor Party.
Turkey originally had a military presence at Baishika base, 25 kilometers from the Iraqi city of Mosul, and Ankara attributed its presence to the war to Dahesh, after the Iraqi government demanded that it withdraw from it on more than one occasion.
In December 2015, the Turkish armed forces deployed a force of 150 soldiers and 25 tanks in Baishika on a mission Ankara claimed was aimed at strengthening the Turkish army personnel there to train the Peshmerga forces and the National Awakening militia, the Sunni equivalent of the Shiite popular crowd, On the pretext of qualifying to participate in the process of restoring Mosul from the hands of the Islamic state organization.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad to inform him of the protest against the Turkish military presence in the north of the country. In another escalating step, the Security Council demanded the intervention of the UN Security Council to find a solution to this problem.
Tension rose in March 2018 between Baghdad and Ankara, when the latter announced that it was seeking to launch a military operation in northern Iraq to "purge the Kurdish armed elements."
