    Baghdad today - Baghdad
The announcement that the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity had signed, on Wednesday, a contract to supply Iranian gas to Iraq in quantities amounting to 50 million cubic meters per day for the next 5 years, led to astonishment in popular and media circles and a number of questions about the reason for renewing the contract for another 5 years, especially with existing projects and promises to stop burning gas in Iraq within 3 years.
Last February, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani confirmed in press statements that Iraq “will reach the stage of self-sufficiency in gas within three years,” stressing that investment in gas associated with oil and natural gas “stems from his conviction” to achieve economic reforms.
    New contracts
Today, the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Fadel, signed a contract to supply gas with the National Iranian Gas Company for a period of five years, with pumping rates reaching 50 million cubic meters per day, which raised “astonishment” among the popular circles and the media.
Iraq relies heavily on Iranian gas imports to feed the electricity network, as the country generates about 14,000 megawatts from the local network, in addition to approximately four thousand additional megawatts by importing gas and energy, according to Reuters.
Iraq is the primary importer of more than 80 percent of Iran's electricity exports over the past few years, according to previous data from the Iranian Ministry of Energy.

Baghdad today “disintegrates” the reason for extending imports
Among the questions generated by renewing the contract for another 5 years, “Baghdad Today” conducted a quick and dismantling review, to find out the reason for renewing the contract.
Iraq produces 44 million cubic meters per day of gas, while it burns 38 million cubic meters per day and needs to import 50 million cubic meters per day, which means that even if gas burning is completely stopped, Iraq still needs 12 million cubic meters per day.
Electricity production currently amounts to 22,000 megawatts per hour, but Iraq needs 35,000 megawatts per hour, while 5,000 megawatts will be produced with solar energy, meaning there is a need for an additional 8,000 megawatts that must be produced from gas stations.
This amount of electricity requires approximately 60 million cubic meters of gas, in addition to Iraq's current need of 50 million cubic meters, making the total more than 100 million cubic meters per day.
While Iraqi gas amounts to 38 million cubic meters per day if burning is stopped, which means that even with stopping burning and with the import of 50 million cubic meters, the total will be less than 90 million cubic meters, which is less than Iraq’s future need during the next few years with the growing demand for gas. Energy annually, according to a digital analysis conducted by “Baghdad Today”.
    Political reasons
Experts believe that Iraq's failure to exploit the gas associated with oil extraction is due to political reasons that may be linked to pressure from Tehran on political forces so that it remains dependent on Iranian gas used to generate electrical energy, in addition to Washington's failure to grant Baghdad successive exemptions from the international sanctions imposed. On Iran and allowing the import of Iranian gas to Iraq.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Electricity’s expenditures from the year 2003 until the year 2021 exceeded $80 billion, according to what experts stated at the time, in addition to the ministry’s allocations in the 2022 and 2023 budgets, which raises the number to about $100 billion over 20 years.
