Final Score: Blue Jackets 3 – Red Wings 2

    Game Summary

The Jackets sluggish starts continued as they had just an awful first 10 minutes of the game. Detroit was all over them with plenty of shots and chances. Thankfully Sergei Bobrovsky came to play and was great making some big saves. Detroit was able to sneak one past and held a 1-0 early. The Jackets shifted momentum on a great shift by the Brandon Saad, Alexander Wennberg, Nick Folingo line. They didn’t score but had a long shift in the Detroit end, which helped the Jackets get their feet under them.

That shift was a start but it wasn’t until Brandon Dubinsky squeaked one past Petr Mrazek that the Jackets really took off.

This was a shot from a terrible angle and somehow manages to bounce around and find a way in. Dubinsky isn’t really looking to score on this play just get the puck on net and as the old saying goes, good things happen. Dubinsky is playing better of late; he had three points in this game to give him five points in his last three games and six in his last five. Things are starting to look better for him.

Cam Atkinson soon followed with his 26th of the season to give the Jackets a 2-1 lead.

This was a great individual play by Atkinson. He wins the initial race to retrieve the puck and sees the defence have given him a ton of space. He and Dubinsky are each able to make a royal road pass and Atkinson then makes a nifty move to shift by the defencmen and get himself a lane.

The Jackets had a strong second period with a 60.87% Corsi but the Wings tied the game up on a 5 on 3 goal by Thomas Vanek. Zach Werenski had himself a very impressive showing in the period and the game. The Michigan native is very fond of Joe Louis Arena and was clearly looking to make an impact in his final game at the Joe. He played the second most ice-time in the game at 25:52. He led all players with six shots goal and an incredible 84.85% Corsi at 5 on 5. He was on the ice for 28 shot attempts for and just five against. He was also getting some great scoring chances.

It’s a shame he wasn’t able to get himself a point in the game.

The Jackets had themselves plenty of chances in the third but were unable to get anything past Mrazek, so the game went to overtime.

In overtime Seth Jones was the hero with a rocket of a slap shot.

Right before this goal Brandon Dubinsky slashed and broke the stick of Henrik Zetterberg, but was not called for a penalty. The Red Wings and their fans were rightfully unhappy. The refereeing in this game was poor all night. Blatant penalties were being missed on both sides and there were inconsistencies all game. That doesn’t excuse the missed call on Dubinsky but this was poorly officiated game across the board and it’s unfortunate they influenced the game like they did.
