The Canadian House of Commons, encouraged by the government of Justin Trudeau, passed a bill that paves the way for combating the phenomenon of Islamophobia or hostility.
The bill, passed by the government, calls for "the need to eliminate the climate of hatred and fear" and "to condemn Islamophobia and all forms of racism and systematic religious discrimination".
Following the January attack on a mosque in Quebec, the Trudeau government was under pressure to denounce all forms of religious discrimination.
In recent months, Islamic and Jewish places of worship throughout Canada have been subject to sabotage.
Most of the deputies of the liberal Trudeau party and the new left-wing Democratic Party supported the non-binding law, while Conservative Party deputies voted against it.
Under the law, a parliamentary committee is mandated to study the government's approach to religious hatred and make recommendations about it in the fall.
The bill was introduced by a Liberal Party MP, Khalid, a Mississauga deputy, a Toronto suburb of 700,000 people, mostly immigrants.
An Angus Reid poll showed a split of public opinion about the law, with 42 percent saying they would vote against it and 29 percent with it, and the rest did not give any answer.
